I’m participating in The Spark Blogfest this week! Head on down there and check out some of the cool blogs that are also joining in the fun!
So the prompt I have chosen to write about is:
*What book made you realize you were doomed to be a writer?
I have always enjoyed reading and writing. After graduating college, becoming a writer was more of a big dream that I did not make enough time for, but it was fun to consider. I read for pleasure occasionally, and I was starting to make it a habit. I also started writing stories, but this was sporadic.
After sharing my desire to read more, a friend who was an avid reader let me borrow books she thought I would like. When I became pregnant for the first time, she gave me a copy of Operating Instructions by Anne Lamott. I knew there was no turning back after this. There was something that I had not understood before – voice. Lamott’s voice was so clear and honest. She made it seem easy, but I knew this was a master at work. I got a copy of Bird by Bird and this has become my go-to guide to writing and inspiration when I need it.
Of course after my daughter was born, I had so much to juggle that time to read and write became scarce. With two kids now, I keep making a little time for it all because I know I want to discover my writing voice. Anne Lamott’s work changed my life and I want to keep striving to write honestly in my own way.
Is there a book that sparked your interest to become a writer?
This blogfest has been fun so far. There are several titles I want to add to my initial list. I’ve created new lists of books and movies I want to read/watch to complete the combos. These are the top selections in each category:
I saw the movie and now I want to read the book:
Gone, Baby, Gone
The Age of Innocence
A Wrinkle in Time
The Joy Luck Club
I read the book and now I want to watch the movie:
Water for Elephants
Eat, Pray, Love
Secret Life of Bees
I’m chipping away at my To Read and To Watch lists!
Any books or films you are eager to read/watch?
Madeleine over at Scribble and Edit is hosting a Novel Films Blogfest!
Here is the challenge if you choose to accept it:
“There’s a lot of novels, comics and plays that have been made into films and TV dramas, BUT how many of them have you BOTH seen the film/TV drama and read the original book, play or comic story?”
This is a fun idea and I’m glad Madeleine got it going. I checked thorough the list of books made into movies to help add to my list. I didn’t realize there were so many! My list is not long, but I did find several books and movies I want to check out now. (I’ll write about that on Wednesday.)
Here is my list:
The Secret Garden
To Kill a Mockingbird
James and the Giant Peach
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Most of these pairings happen to be children’s books/films. They were all wonderful to read and watch.
I hope you join in the fun or at least check out the participating blogs.
Have you enjoyed the books/movies on my list as well?
